Introduction Ombahe Tours

At the heart of Africa lie untamed wilderness areas that fostered the development of an awe-inspiring kaleidoscope of fauna and flora and rich ethnic cultures. Since times untold, indigenous people relied on what Mother Nature provided. In return, they respected and lived in tune with her creations as much as with their ancestral spirits. Maintaining that balance was the key to survival for both humans and natural environment but only those few people who resisted the temptations of 'modern' life did so successfully.

The Otjiherero-speaking Ovahimba, commonly referred to as Himba, are one of Africa's last remaining ethnic groups who chose to maintain their traditional life-style by retreating into Namibia's most remote and unspoilt wilderness area. Slowly the industrialised nations are reawakening to the importance of that balance for the future of our planet. The Ovahimba with their ancient knowledge and traditions can not only serve as sources of inspiration and encouragement but they also deserve recognition and support as the carriers of an invaluable cultural heritage who are trying to survive on the brinks of a modern African society.

No tour of Namibia can therefore be truly complete and no foreign visitor can truly come close to understanding the essence of our home continent Africa without experiencing close encounters with those that we, John and Gerson Kasaona, the founders of Ombahe Tours, share background and blood-lines with - the Himba.
